The Pioneer Anomaly: The Spacecraft That Puzzled Physics
For more than 30 years, two of humanity’s most distant spacecraft carried a small mystery. The Pioneer 10 and 11 probes, launched in the early 1970s, were drifting ever so slightly off course — decelerating a tiny bit more than gravity alone could explain. Careful modelling — published around 2012 by a team analysing the probes’ heat — showed the anomaly was caused by thermal recoil force: the spacecraft radiated heat unevenly (from their electrical generators and instruments), and that escaping infrared radiation gave a tiny, continuous push. Once the heat was properly accounted for, the anomaly essentially vanished.
