What Is a Neutron Star? The Densest Objects in the Universe

A neutron star is what remains when a massive star dies and its core collapses. It is one of the most extreme objects in the universe: an entire star’s worth of mass crushed into a ball only about 20 kilometres across — the size of a city, yet heavier than the Sun.

How a neutron star forms

When a star far more massive than the Sun runs out of fuel, its core can no longer resist its own gravity. It collapses in a fraction of a second and the outer layers explode as a supernova. What’s left is the crushed core.

Gravity squeezes it so hard that protons and electrons merge into neutrons, packed together as tightly as the particles inside an atomic nucleus. That is why it’s called a neutron star — it is essentially one gigantic nucleus.

Almost unimaginable density

A neutron star is so dense that:

  • a teaspoon of its material would weigh around a billion tonnes on Earth;
  • its surface gravity is roughly a hundred billion times stronger than Earth’s;
  • if you dropped an object from one metre up, it would hit the surface at millions of kilometres per hour.

Any more mass and even neutrons can’t hold it up — it would collapse further into a black hole.

Spinning cosmic lighthouses

Neutron stars are born spinning incredibly fast — some rotate hundreds of times per second. Many beam radiation from their magnetic poles; as the star spins, the beam sweeps past Earth like a lighthouse. We detect these regular pulses and call such stars pulsars. Their timing is so precise it rivals atomic clocks.

Some neutron stars, called magnetars, have the strongest magnetic fields known in the universe — trillions of times stronger than a fridge magnet.

Why they matter

In 2017, astronomers detected two neutron stars colliding — through both gravitational waves and light. The event confirmed that such mergers forge heavy elements like gold and platinum. In a real sense, some of the precious metal on Earth was born in a neutron-star collision.
