Why Is the Sky Blue? The Real Physics of Light Scattering

It’s one of the first questions every child asks, and the answer is a genuinely elegant piece of physics. The sky is blue because of how sunlight interacts with the air — a process called Rayleigh scattering.

Sunlight is every colour at once

Although it looks white, sunlight is a mix of all the colours of the rainbow. Each colour is light of a different wavelength: red light has the longest wavelength, blue and violet the shortest.

Air scatters blue light much more

As sunlight travels through the atmosphere, it bumps into tiny molecules of nitrogen and oxygen. These molecules scatter the light — sending it off in all directions. Crucially, the amount of scattering depends sharply on wavelength: shorter wavelengths scatter far more than longer ones. In fact, blue light is scattered roughly ten times more strongly than red.

So as sunlight passes overhead, the blue portion gets scattered all across the sky. When you look up, blue light is arriving at your eyes from every direction — and the sky looks blue.

Why not violet?

Violet light has an even shorter wavelength than blue and scatters even more — so why isn’t the sky violet? Two reasons: the Sun emits less violet than blue, and our eyes are more sensitive to blue than to violet. The combination makes us perceive the sky as blue.

Why sunsets are red

The same physics explains red sunsets. When the Sun is low, its light travels through much more atmosphere to reach you. Along that long path, nearly all the blue light gets scattered away before it arrives — leaving the reds and oranges to reach your eyes directly. That’s why the setting Sun and the sky around it glow warm.

And a bonus: why space is black

Above the atmosphere there’s almost nothing to scatter sunlight, so astronauts see a black sky even in full sunshine. No air, no scattering, no blue.
